Pixel Chess is Namik Zade’s simple attempt to see how far a chess board can be scaled down digitally in order to keep dimensions minimal, while still being able to recognize the different pieces.
The minimum dimensions for a recognizable piece is 3x3 pixels, placed in a 5x5 pixel square. These dimensions give just enough freedom to create the 6 different pieces in a recognizable manner.
While the board can be scaled down to 24x24 pixels, 1 pixel of free space is needed around a piece for a visually pleasant set, adding an extra 16 pixels to the overall design.
Drag pieces from the palettes to the board. To remove a piece, simply drag and drop it anywhere outside the board. On mobile, you can pinch the board to zoom in and out.
